Pigmentation
Definition
Skin pigmentation results from melanin synthesis in highly specialized dendritic cells located in the basal layer of the epidermis : the melanocytes. They transfer their melanin content to neighboring keratinocytes, which gradually move toward the skin surface with their accumulated pigment, resulting in visible skin color.
Melanin synthesis in melanocytes may be affected both by internal (e.g. hormonal) and external (e.g. UV rays) factors resulting in the modulation of skin color.
Skin pigmentary disorders include both hyperpigmentary disorders with an excessive deposition of melanin in the epidermis and/or dermis (melasma, lentigines* (internet link), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and hypopigmentary disorders among which vitiligo* (internet link) is characterized by the loss of functional melanocytes in the epidermis.
