Nalco is the leading provider of integrated water treatment and process improvement services, chemicals and equipment programs for industrial and institutional applications. The company currently serves more than 60,000 customer locations, representing a broad range of end markets. It has established a global presence with more than 10,000 employees operating in 130 countries, supported by a comprehensive network of manufacturing facilities, sales offices and research centres. Nalco Europe B.V. is the European business and technical centre, has more than 100 employees working in Leiden (The Netherlands) and approximately 2500 in other European offices. The European headquarters is a multicultural office with English as the official company language. An opportunity is opening in the research centre in Leiden for a 6 month Traineeship as a:

Chemist / Electrochemist / Material scientist

Working as part of an R&D team, the selected trainee will carry out a project based on new innovative corrosion inhibiting compounds using state-of-the-art electrochemical techniques: Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Electrochemical Frequency Modulation (EFM). The aim is to come up with alternative green cooling water programs.

The project would consist in:
§ Assisting in the setting up and exploration of the capabilities and limits of EIS and EFM.
§ Running EIS/EFM experiments to characterize the corrosion inhibition processes occurring at metallic surfaces.
§ Performing a detailed analysis to identify correlations between molecular structures and corrosion inhibition performances.
§ Enquiring on regulatory and environmental issues related to the most promising new corrosion inhibiting molecules.

Requirements:
The trainee, in his last year of DEA, DESS, Ecole D’ingénieur, Mastère or MsC, will need to be innovative, independent and proactive. A rigorous and scientific approach is also required for the success of this project. In addition to chemistry, the candidate needs to feel at ease with basic knowledge in electronics, signal processing and mathematics (imaginary numbers). Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required; additional fluency in another European language is appreciated. This traineeship comes with a monthly allowance and can start anytime between May and August 2006.
