To the attention of Dr XXX
Leader of the section cystic fibrosis gene therapy group
CENTRE FOR GENOMIC & EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE
    University of Edinburgh

Object: Application for a research internship in your laboratory

    Sir,
I am applying for an internship in your research unit “cystic fibrosis gene therapy”. Currently student in a Master of science in Cellular and Molecular Biology "Genomics, Epigenetics and Genetics» after having obtained a degree in life sciences at the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France, I would be very interested by a research internship in the field of Gene Therapy. I am especially interested in cystic fibrosis gene therapy because it is a disease that I already know well. I studied many aspects at the university in physiology and in physiopathology teaching units (even in bacteriology). Moreover, I am currently in an internship for the summer at the INSERM institute in Paris and the research is about long non-coding RNAs involved in the inflammatory reaction in CF patients.
I found your laboratory by reading an article you published in the journal Thorax last year (Preparation for a first-in-man lentivirus trial in patients with cystic fibrosis). I found this article and the researches it describes fascinating and I have read that you are now studying how the integrated viral DNA interacts with the genome of its target cells. Those are totally the kind of researches I am really interested in. Indeed, I am passionate about biology, especially the field of genetics since high school. The fields of virology and physiology are also of great interest to me.
I have strong biological bases. I am specialized in genetics and epigenetics but have also chosen to study courses in virology, biochemistry, cell biology and bacteriology. If you are interested, you can find the list of all the teaching units that I followed during my university course as an attachment.
I also had the opportunity to develop practical skills during practical work and during my internship at the INSERM institute. For example, I used techniques for the production of recombinant proteins by fusion to a poly-histidine label. I have also made many cell cultures and cultures of bacterial clones, cellular transfections, electrophoresis, PCR (qPCR, rtPCR ...), western blots, purifications of proteins or RNA, ELISA, Genetic analysis by bacterial conjugation, Gene silencing (TGS and PTGS by RNAinterference) ... I also know how to use some tools for bioinformatics analysis of DNA sequences, plasmid constructions and do statistical tests. Those experiences allowed me to develop rigor and autonomy.
Concerning my English level, it is not perfect yet but correct. I had some Teaching units this year that were totally in English and I had no difficulties to understand the teacher or to express myself. That’s why I don’t think it will be an issue.
With a heart to convince you of my motivation, I am at your disposal to provide you with further information or to meet you directly. You will find in my appendix my curriculum vitae which show my University course and my few professional experiences as well as the list of teaching units that I have followed. I should also point out that my disability situation may require some little adjustments during the internship. However, this will not affect my motivation or the quality of my work.
I would like to thank you in advance for your attention to my candidature.
    Best Regards,
    Merci!!
